Axel Salto (1889–1961) was a Danish ceramic artist, designer, and writer, widely regarded as one of the most important figures in 20th-century Scandinavian ceramics.
He originally trained as a painter at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts but soon turned to ceramics, where he developed a highly distinctive style.
Salto worked with the renowned Danish porcelain manufacturer Royal Copenhagen, where he produced both unique pieces and designs for wider production. His use of rich glazes—especially deep greens, browns, and blues—further emphasized the natural, almost sculptural quality of his ceramics.
Salto's works are now held in major museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen. He is celebrated as a pioneer who bridged art, craft, and design.
